Researchers have recently created new medical technology, making brain surgery more precise and lowering the risks of late effects such as difficulty with balance, vision, coordination, memory, speech along with more serious effects such as stroke, bleeding or infection, swelling and coma. This new technology is called the smart needle. It is a high-tech imaging probe attached to a biopsy needle and is no bigger than the width of a human hair. This improved technology can give doctors and surgeons a "second set of eyes" allowing them to see blood cells more closely and carefully to help prevent late effects of brain surgery and prevent future abnormalities. Researchers have proved that the smart needle can successfully identify previously unrecognizable blood cells. This innovation will open the way for safer and smarter brain surgery, allowing surgeons to do things they were unable to do before with less complications.
